How to Roast Chicory Root
Roasting chicory root at home is a straightforward process that yields a delicious and nutritious coffee substitute. Follow these steps to make your own roasted chicory root.

- Fresh chicory roots
- Baking sheet
- Oven
- Knife
- Food processor or grinder
Step-by-Step Roasting Process
Step 1: Harvest or Purchase Fresh Chicory Roots – If you have chicory plants in your garden, you can harvest the roots in the fall when they are most mature. If not, you can purchase fresh chicory roots from health food stores and farmers’ markets, or you can buy already dried roots from herb suppliers like Mountain Rose Herbs, my favorite place to buy herbs online.
Step 2: Clean the Roots – Thoroughly wash the chicory roots to remove any dirt. Use a brush to scrub off any stubborn soil.
Step 3: Chop the Roots – Using a sharp knife, chop the chicory roots into small pieces. Smaller pieces will roast more evenly and quickly.
Step 4: Preheat the Oven – Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C).
Step 5: Spread on a Baking Sheet – Spread the chopped chicory root pieces evenly on a baking sheet. Make sure they are in a single layer to ensure even roasting.
Step 6: Roast the Roots – Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and roast for about 1.5 to 2 hours (maybe more). Stir the roots every 20-30 minutes to ensure even roasting. The chicory root pieces are done when they are dry and have a deep, rich brown color.
Step 7: Cool and Grind – Remove the roasted chicory root from the oven and let it cool completely. Once cooled, use a food processor or coffee grinder to grind the roasted roots to a consistency similar to coffee grounds.
How to Use Roasted Chicory Root
Roasted chicory root can be brewed just like coffee. Here’s a simple method to enjoy your homemade chicory coffee:
Brewing Instructions
- Measure: Use one to two tablespoons of roasted chicory root per cup of water.
- Boil Water: Bring water to a boil and let it cool slightly.
- Brew: Place the chicory root grounds in a French press, pour the hot water over them, and let it steep for 4-5 minutes.
- Strain and Serve: Press down the plunger and pour your chicory coffee into a cup. Enjoy it black or with your favorite milk and sweetener.
