Homemade Natural Deodorant
I’ve been on a mission to create my own natural, effective personal care products, and homemade natural deodorant was at the top of my list. Many store-bought deodorants contain harsh chemicals and baking soda, which can be irritating to sensitive skin. After experimenting with different formulations, I found a gentle, nourishing recipe that actually works!
This homemade deodorant is free of baking soda, relying instead on magnesium oil, arrowroot powder, and bentonite clay to absorb moisture and neutralize odor. It also includes tea tree oil for its antibacterial properties and beeswax to help firm up the consistency—making it perfect for a recycled deodorant stick.
Why Make Homemade Natural Deodorant?
Crafting your own homemade natural deodorant allows you to control the ingredients, ensuring they are skin-friendly and free from harmful additives. Plus, it’s incredibly satisfying to know exactly what you’re putting on your body. This formula is packed with natural ingredients that nourish the skin while keeping odor at bay.
Ingredients
This homemade natural deodorant recipe makes one full tube if using a recycled deodorant stick.
- 1 Tablespoon Magnesium Oil
- 2 Tablespoons Coconut Oil
- 2 Tablespoons Shea Butter or Cacao Butter
- 2 Tablespoons Arrowroot Powder
- 2 Tablespoons Bentonite Clay
- 1 Tablespoon Beeswax Pellets
- 5-8 Drops Tea Tree Essential Oil
- 5-8 Drops Geranium, Lavender, Lemon, or Ylang Ylang, (these pair well with tea tree and offer a pleasant fragrance)
Supplies Needed
- Wide Mouth Mason Jar
- Immersion Blender
- Small Glass Storage Container or Recycled Deodorant Tube
Instructions
Melt the Oils & Beeswax
In a double boiler, melt the coconut oil, shea butter, and beeswax pellets. If you don’t have a double boiler, you can place a wide-mouth mason jar in a pot of simmering water and let the ingredients melt inside the jar. Remove from heat when fully liquefied.Cool Slightly Before Adding Dry Ingredients
Allow the melted mixture to cool for 5 to 10 minutes. This slight cooling helps in better incorporation of the dry ingredients.Mix in the Dry Ingredients
Stir in the arrowroot powder and bentonite clay until well combined. Using an immersion blender at this stage ensures a smooth, creamy texture.Add Magnesium Oil & Emulsify
Slowly pour in the magnesium oil while blending with the immersion blender. The mixture will thicken considerably during this step, potentially becoming too thick to pour.Add Essential Oils
Stir in your chosen essential oils and blend one final time to distribute them evenly.
6. Transfer & Set
Using a small spoon, scoop the thickened mixture into a small glass jar or a recycled deodorant tube. Let it cool completely before capping. If you’re in a hurry, pop it into the fridge for 20-30 minutes to speed up the setting process.
7. Label & Enjoy
Once fully set, slap on a pretty label, and you have a nourishing, homemade deodorant that works beautifully!
