How to Prepare Dandelion Root

Every year, my excitement for harvesting dandelion root grows. It’s a ritual that I look forward to every fall, as I love using this plant in various ways all year round. I usually search for dandelions in open fields, making sure they are away from any pollutants. I dig the roots out, typically with a garden fork, then wash them thoroughly and allow them to dry.  This practice makes me feel connected to nature, and it’s a perfect opportunity to learn about wild edibles, and secure some nutrient-dense food while enjoying the beauty of the outdoors.

Here are the steps I follow to prepare dandelion roots: 

  1. Harvesting: The first step is to harvest dandelion roots. The best time to harvest is in the fall, after the first frost, when the plant has stored up nutrients in the root. Look for healthy, robust roots that are not too thin or too thick.

  2. Cleaning: Once you have harvested the roots, clean them thoroughly by scrubbing them under running water. You may need to use a vegetable brush to remove any dirt or debris.

  3. Drying: After cleaning, dry the roots by laying them out on a clean towel or baking sheet and placing them in a warm, dry area. You can also use a dehydrator or an oven set to a low temperature.

  4. Roasting: Once the roots are dry, you can roast them to enhance their flavor. To do this, preheat your oven to 350 degrees F and spread the dried roots out on a baking sheet. Roast for 20-30 minutes, or until the roots are golden brown.

Dandelion Root Tea Recipe

Preparing dandelion root tea is easy and can be done at home using dried dandelion roots. Here is a simple recipe for making dandelion root tea:


  • 1 tablespoon of dried and roasted dandelion roots
  • 2 cups of water


  1. Add the dried dandelion roots to a tea infuser or a tea bag.
  2. Bring 2 cups of water to a boil in a small pot.
  3. Add the tea infuser or tea bag to the pot and reduce the heat to a simmer.
  4. Let the tea steep for 10-15 minutes.
  5. Remove the tea infuser or tea bag and pour the tea into a cup.
  6. Add honey or lemon if desired.
  7. Enjoy!

Recipe: Dandelion Root Tea Latte

For a delicious twist on traditional dandelion root tea, try this recipe for a dandelion root tea latte:


  • 1 tablespoon of dried dandelion roots
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1 cup of almond milk
  • 1 teaspoon of honey
  • 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon


  1. Add the dried dandelion roots to a tea infuser or a tea bag.
  2. Bring 1 cup of water to a boil in a small pot.
  3. Add the tea infuser or tea bag to the pot and reduce the heat to a simmer.
  4. Let the tea steep for 10-15 minutes.
  5. In a separate pot, heat the almond milk on medium heat until it begins to steam.
  6. Add the honey and cinnamon to the almond milk and stir until combined.
  7. Pour the dandelion root tea into a mug.
  8. Slowly pour the almond milk mixture into the mug, stirring gently.
  9. Sprinkle cinnamon on top.
  10. Enjoy!
